Buying a used game console: what to check before you pay (PlayStation, Xbox, Switch)

A used PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X can cost you €100 to €150 less than new, but consoles hide traps a phone or laptop does not have: a locked user account, worn controller sticks, and the digital-versus-disc split, which decides whether you can even play the games.

Our own shop leans toward phones and laptops, but the same inspection principles apply to consoles. Here is the checklist to run before you agree on a price.

Accounts: rule out a ban or a lock

Ask the seller to sign into PlayStation Network or Xbox Live while you watch. A banned account shows a suspension notice immediately; without signing in you cannot check the store, multiplayer, or saved game transfers.

On a Nintendo Switch, confirm it is linked to a working Nintendo Account and that the eShop loads normally. A console with no linked account cannot install updates or buy games.

Digital versus disc: who actually owns the games

On PlayStation and Xbox, purchased digital games are tied to an account, and the console can only play them offline if it is set as that account's "primary" or "home" console. If the seller does not remove the console as primary before selling, you lose access to every installed game the moment they sign in elsewhere.

The safest move is asking the seller to factory reset the console before handover. You lose their installed games, but you get a clean console with no risk of your library disappearing a week later. A disc edition avoids this entirely: a physical game runs independently of anyone else's account.

The disc drive: test with an older, scuffed game

  • ·Load at least two different discs, ideally one older, more used disc rather than only a brand-new one.
  • ·Listen while it loads: loud whirring, grinding or a prolonged clicking laser noise signals a worn drive.
  • ·Check the disc tray opens and closes smoothly, with no sticking.
  • ·Play the game past the loading screen into actual gameplay, since read errors often only show up mid-session.

Stick drift and controller condition

Drift means an analog stick reports movement even though nobody is touching it. Check it on a site like gamepad-tester.com: connect the controller and watch the on-screen dot while you let go of the stick. If the dot creeps on its own, the potentiometers are worn.

On DualSense and Xbox controllers also test the triggers, vibration and Bluetooth pairing with another device. Fixing drift costs roughly €15 to €25; on an older controller, a replacement is often the better deal.

Overheating and fan noise

Let the console run a demanding game for at least ten minutes. A loud, climbing fan or a hot exterior points to dust buildup or dried-out thermal paste, which is common on older PS4 and Xbox One units.

Accessories, serial number and original packaging

  • ·Confirm the original power cable is included (an external power brick on Xbox), at least one controller and an HDMI cable.
  • ·Compare the serial number on the underside sticker with the one shown in system settings, if visible; a mismatch is worth asking about.
  • ·The original box is not essential, but it raises the price if you resell later.

Realistic prices for used consoles

Prices swing with generation and supply, so check completed Bolha listings, not asking prices. Roughly: a used PlayStation 5 runs €320 to €420, an Xbox Series S €180 to €240, a Nintendo Switch OLED €230 to €280, and an older PS4 €100 to €160, depending on condition and included controllers.

Consoles hold value better than phones while a generation stays current, then drop sharply once the successor ships, so buying right before a new generation is rarely a good deal.

Red flags

  • ·The seller refuses to sign into PSN, Xbox Live or a Nintendo account in front of you.
  • ·The price is far below market for a console with extra controllers or games.
  • ·The serial number on the box and on the console do not match.
  • ·The seller wants payment upfront with no viewing or live test.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if a used console is banned?+

Ask the seller to sign into PlayStation Network, Xbox Live or a Nintendo account in front of you. A blocked or suspended account shows a restriction notice immediately, and without signing in you cannot check the store or multiplayer either.

Do I lose games if I buy a used console with a digital edition?+

You can, if the seller does not remove the console as their account's "primary" device before selling. The safest fix is asking for a factory reset before handover, which removes the risk of losing access to games entirely.

How do I spot stick drift on a used controller?+

Connect the controller to a site like gamepad-tester.com and watch the on-screen dot while you let go of the stick. If it creeps on its own, that is drift; a repair costs roughly €15 to €25.

What is a used PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series S worth?+

A used PlayStation 5 runs €320 to €420 and an Xbox Series S €180 to €240, depending on condition, included controllers and current Bolha listings. Check completed listings for the real price, not asking prices.

Is a disc edition console worth more than a digital one?+

Usually yes, because a disc edition can be played and resold independently of anyone else's account, while a digital edition stays tied to the original owner until reset. The price gap is typically €20 to €40.
