Buying a used smartwatch: what to check before you pay
A smartwatch packs a lot of electronics into a small body, which makes it hard to judge by eye: the battery, the water-resistant seals and the sensors wear down without any visible sign from outside.
We buy and sell watches ourselves, so we know the spots where a used watch most often lets a buyer down. Here is the checklist we run ourselves at every inspection.
Battery health: check it, don't take their word for it
On Apple Watch, open the Watch app on the paired iPhone and check General → About → Battery, which shows actual capacity against new. On Samsung Galaxy Watch, find it in device settings under Battery care.
If no capacity figure is available, charge the watch fully and use it for a normal day: if it dies by noon while the manufacturer promises all-day life, the battery is worn out.
Account locks: without a sign-out, it is just plastic
An Apple Watch is tied to the previous owner's Apple ID through Activation Lock: the seller must sign out and remove the watch in the Watch app on their iPhone before selling, otherwise it stays permanently locked and useless to you after a reset.
The same applies to Samsung and Wear OS watches: the device must be signed out of the previous owner's Samsung or Google account. Ask the seller to do a factory reset while you watch, so you see it set up without issues.
Water resistance fades with age
A water resistance rating (say 5 ATM or 50 m) applies to a new watch with intact seals. The rubber gaskets around the case and buttons shrink over time and with temperature swings, so an older watch no longer handles the same exposure it did on day one, even though the manufacturer sticker is unchanged.
Ask the seller whether they wore the watch in the shower or while swimming. Condensation under the glass or a foggy display after contact with water is a clear sign the seal no longer holds.
Sensors, buttons and haptics
- ·Check heart rate: it should settle on a sensible number during a short walk, not a fixed value or an oddly jumpy one.
- ·Test GPS outdoors: the location should lock in under a minute.
- ·Press every button and the crown; a sticky crown or a button that will not click is often an expensive fault.
- ·Turn on the haptic (vibration) alert in settings; a weak or missing buzz points to a worn-out motor.
Charger, band and accessories
Chargers differ between generations of the same watch, so confirm you get the correct cable for this exact model; without it, a replacement charger is an extra cost. The band is a wear item and cheap to replace, so it should not be a reason to walk away from an otherwise good deal.
What our condition grade means
Every watch we buy gets graded A, B or C: A means like new, no visible wear and a healthy battery; B means normal scuffs on the band or case that do not affect function; C means clearly used or with a fault we describe plainly in the listing. Every watch is also factory reset before it goes back on sale, so no previous owner account is still linked to it.

We run the same checklist when we buy a watch from you: we inspect it, grade it and offer a fair price. Looking to buy one instead? You will find checked and graded watches in our shop.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check battery health on a used smartwatch?+
On Apple Watch, check General → About → Battery in the Watch app; on Samsung Galaxy Watch, check Battery care in settings. If no figure is shown, charge it fully and confirm it lasts a normal full day.
Why does it matter that the watch is signed out of the previous owner's account?+
Apple Watch, Samsung and Wear OS watches are tied to a user account through Activation Lock or Reactivation Lock. Without the seller signing out, the watch stays permanently locked and useless to you after a reset, so confirm this before paying.
Can a used watch still handle swimming or the shower?+
It depends on the age and condition of the seals. Rubber gaskets shrink over time, so an older watch often no longer holds the same water resistance rating it did when new. Ask the seller about its history of water exposure.
What does an A, B or C condition grade mean for a smartwatch?+
A means like new with no visible wear, B means normal scuffs that do not affect function, and C means clearly used or with a plainly described fault. Every watch is also factory reset before resale.
